Sunny Outlook for Solar Energy

The Hawaii Electric Company (HECO) placed solar panels on the roof of the Easter Seals building on Oahu, making the non-profit agency the solar installation that pushed them over the 20 megawatt mark.

Each megawatt of electricity produced from photo voltaic cells powers about 800 homes. Cities around the country are ramping up their use of solar power and other renewable energy sources to reduce power costs and to help the environment.

The largest solar power project in the world is about to begin construction in California. When it opens the Blythe Solar Power Project will produce about 1,000 megawatts of power. To put that in perspective, the entire country of India is in line to produce about 700 megawatts of solar power this year.

According to a solar energy outlook report late last year, the worldwide installed capacity for solar panels is projected to exceed 33,400 megawatts by the year 2015.

HECO reached its 20 megawatt milestone in just two years and anticipates hitting the next one of 40 megawatts within a year.

Solar power is really the only way to go. We all need to do our part to spread the word. It’s just about getting the word out that solar and going green takes “just about the same effort”.
