Move over Jetsons. The first roadable aircraft or flying car has been cleared for road use.
The Terrafugia Transition is the now the first car-plane hybrid that has been approved for both flight and road use. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration just approved the Transition for road use after requiring lighter weight windows and heavier tires.
With those adjustments the car plane is ready to roll…er…fly. It will be able to maintain highway driving speed of up to 82 mph and gets about 35 miles per gallon, using regular gasoline.
The Massachusetts-based company is taking orders for the $250,000 flying car and already 100 orders have been placed. It will spend the rest of the year testing the Transistion and they will go on the market sometime next year. To reserve yours just plunk down a refundable $10,000 deposit.
Every driver of the new vehicle will need a standard driver’s license as well as a sport pilots license before taking to the road or the air. And while the car can turn into a plane with the push of a button, take offs and landings will only be allowed at airports.
So no flying off the freeway to avoid a traffic jam.
