Fake Steak for the Future

Fake Steak for the Future

21 papers produced from scientists in different fields released a report this week saying that technology may be one of the best fixes for a growing problem. Members of Britain’s Royal Society concluded that artificial meat — created in giant vats using vegetable protein — may be one of the best solutions to reducing future food shortages created by a growing global population and climate change.

The papers were released ahead of an international climate change meeting in Cancun, Mexico at the end of the year.

Other solutions to the future food crisis — feeding livestock nano-enhanced medicine to make them produce better meat, improving refrigeration in developing nations and just consuming less by reducing food waste.

  1. Keith Edgerley says:

The Israelites in their desert wanderings,so their old writings say, had a machine which apparently looked like a large domed vat covered with pipework which produced food six days an week. On the seventh it had to be taken apart and cleaned. It was driven by solar heat.
The Philistines are said to have stolen it, but they didn’t clean it and the food made them ill so they gave the machine back.

OTOH, does anyone remember TVP from the 60s?
Soya-based textured vegetable protein came in chunks or like minced beef. It never caught on, mainly, I think, because consumers didn’t bother to follow the instructions for use, which prescribed presoaking and draining.
