Biomedical breakthroughs happen all the time. But most people don’t stop to think about how the treatment that cured what ailed them or eased their suffering came about in the first place.

Students in the Pacific Northwest are getting a taste of what medical science can do and has done for them, their families and the community.

Participants in the Northwest Association for Biomedical Research “Biomedical Breakthroughs and My Life” essay contest had to think about someone they knew who benefited from medical research.

The winners went on a day-long field trip to Swedish Medical Center in Seattle where they heard about the latest and greatest at its research center.

13-year-old Aidan Hurst won First Prize for his essay, titled “My Retinas Looking Towards the Light”. Read all the essays here .
