Unknown Greenhouse Gases Pose New Climate Risk

Image of Earth from orbit

In the last six months scientists have become aware of two new greenhouse gases that could add to a growing problem that is heating our atmosphere and changing the climate.

Last fall, nitrogen trifluoride–a chemical used in making liquid crystal flat screen TVs–began showing up in greater abundance than expected. Now a new gas called sulfuryl fluoride is proving to be a new climate threat.

But neither greenhouse gas is counted among the 63 known gases the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change monitors.

And, there are others out there.

New opportunities exist to create non-greenhouse gas-emitting chemicals to replace the ones that get trapped in the atmosphere and linger there for decades.
