When the bridge crossing the Mississippi River in Minnesota fell, killing several motorists, people began worrying that other bridges could collapse as well. Scientists have been studying how to catch cracks and other damage before it becomes visible.

It is quite obvious from press reports that the problem was not hidden cracks, but ones that were quite visible but nobody bothered to repair in a timely manner.
